John Greaney

Head Coach

Hello, my name is John Greaney, and I am the new Chatham Sharks Head Coach. I am excited to be coaching in Southern Ontario again. From 2008-2019, I was the head coach, president and owner of the Superior Sea Lions Swim Club in Thunder Bay. I am grateful for the opportunity to coach the Chatham Pool Sharks to help them move forward into a new age. Its been a very challenging year but it looks like calmer waters are coming. A year ago was very different then now so hopefully we keep moving forward and the 2021-2022 season will operate as a normal swim season.

Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 1964.

Lived in Montreal : 1964-1970.

Johannesburg, South Africa: 1970-1975: I started my competitive swimming career with my school, St. Davids Marist Brothers.

Toronto: 1980-1999: I swam with Etobicoke swim club, Michael Power High School and Alderwood Masters Club. Lifeguarded and taught swimming lessons with the City of Toronto and Toronto YMCA’s. I coached competitive swimming with the City of Toronto and East York Swim Club.

Northwestern Ontario: 1999-2003, 2008-2019: Head Coach-Red Lake; Assistant Head Coach-Thunder Bay Thunderbolts; Head Coach-Atikokan; Head Coach-Superior Sea Lions.

Southern Ontario: 2003-2008 Assistant Coach-St. Thomas; Head Coach-Midland; Assistant Coach-Scarborough. 2019-2020: Assistant Coach-Aurora.

As a swimmer I swam at the National level in the breaststroke and IM events. I won many medals at the Master’s level. As a coach and swim instructor, I have worked with all levels of swimmers from preschool to National. I have worked with some of the top head coaches in Canada who are still coaching and I was a Head Coach with clubs that were very similar to the Chatham Swim Club.

I look forward to meeting all of you and getting back on the deck to coach practices and at swimmeets. Ive been swimming daily at the Blenheim pool and this past summer I swam in Lake Superior and every swim feels wonderful and invigorating. Lets get back to the pool.
