Sharks at Junior Nationals
Calgary, AB- Three of Chatham’s top swimmers are competing this week in Calgary at the Canadian Junior Swimming Championships (Junior Nationals). The championship meet runs from July 24-29. In order to qualify for Junior Nationals you have to swim the fast prequalifying time standards in each event you want to swim; swimmers spend their most of their season trying to hit a national time standard. David Tran (16), Madeleine Tran (14), and Quinn Matteis (14) will make up the Sharks contingent at the championship meet.
Junior Nationals is a high stakes and fast meet that brings together Canada’s fastest 17/u swimmers and often features swimmers from other countries. Just getting into an A or B final is the goal of most swimmers, and can be an incredibly hard goal to achieve. The swimmers also compete for the coveted chickens- stuffed chickens are only given out to the podium finishers at Canadian national swimming championship meets. An often-underestimated factor is that racing in the altitude in Calgary does put an additional challenge on swimmers from other non-altitude teams.
Madeleine and David Tran are veterans to this meet, while for Quinn Matteis this is his first appearance at Junior Nationals. Genevieve Sasseville also qualified but was unable to attend due to training.
Updates will be provided throughout the meet. A live stream can be found at https://www.swimming.ca/en/events-results/events/2019-canadian-junior-championships/
